GBCT fund leadership course for deaf children

During August, the GBCT were delighted to offer a grant to the National Deaf Children’s Society to support their Young Leader’s Course.

The Young Leaders Course combined activities and key skills training for 9 deaf young people aged 16-18.  They developed their leadership skills and learnt to work in and lead groups. The young people used their new skills to lead sessions for the other children attending the venue.

The course resulted in those 9 deaf young people gaining a qualification in Level One Award in Sports Leadership. In the long term, these changes will help the young people to manage the challenges associated with their deafness and to have a greater quality of life. The young people have increased levels of confidence and self-esteem and raised expectations for what they can achieve. They learnt new skills and made new friends, resulting in increased confidence.

These deaf young people, by gaining a qualification, have increased their employability. Successes achieved over the week have shown the young people that when they have confidence in their own abilities, they can achieve their goals.

The parents of the young people, shared superb feedback:

“xx had the most amazing time. I would like to say a huge thank you from us all and I know he will cherish the week that he has just had. Once again a huge thank you to you all for just helping to make my son feel like a normal child. The work that you all do is just amazing. A huge thanks.”

The National Deaf Children Society said: “Many, many thanks to all of the Trustees at the George Bairstow Charitable Trust, and their fundraisers, for supporting deaf young people across England.”
